The Problem-Solution Model of Creativity

Hey if you don’t wanna read the below, just watch this for 40 mins. It’s awesome. (It’s also: fractal.)

The Next Dimension – 3D Mandelbrot Fractal Zoom (MMY3D) [Maths Town]

So anyway, I’m a fan of:

The Problem-Solution Model of Creativity.

I like the idea that all of life is problem-solving.

(NOTE: The word “problem” here, means: aim, goal, desire, objectives, creative problem/s and not, just: the more narrow, negative sense of the word, “problem”)…!

It (the P-S Model) just seems to me, the simplest, easiest, and most fun & effective way to think about: creativity.

`…usually insights tend to come to prepared minds, that is, to those who have thought long and hard about a given set of problematic issues.

There are three main sources from which problems typically arise: personal experiences, requirements of the domain, and social pressures.’

(Creativity, Csikszentmihalyi 01996, 02013, p. 83)

(Anyway – If you know of a better, simpler, faster & funner way: please lemme know!)

In Issue 3:1 (02013) of Scientific Study of Literature journal, three consilient professors were asked to contribute a manifesto on evolutionary literary study, namely: Brian Boyd, Joe Carroll & Jon Gottschall.

SSOL 31 02013

SSOL 3:1 (02013)

The resulting 3 (great!) articles, were:

What’s your problem? And how might we deepen it? (Boyd 02013)

A rationale for evolutionary studies of literature (Carroll 02013)

Toward consilience, not literary Darwinism (Gottschall 02013)

At any rate, because I like all 3 articles – but particularly Boyd’s (02013) one, regarding the Problem-Solution Model – here’s an example of the Problem-Solution approach:

  1. The Problem
  2. Definitions
  3. The Proposed Solution
  4. How It Solves The Problem
  5. How It Solves Other Problems
  6. Possible Objections / `Opposite Conjectures’ (?)
  7. …So what?
  8. How do you Test it?
  9. & …Now what?

So here we go:

  1. The Problem – Until 2016, nobody on Earth, nor throughout all humanimal history, ever knew how memes (units of culture) were: structured. (Nor, for that matter: the units of story… Or, if they did, they weren’t telling.) So, in the domain of: culture (and cultural evolution), it was exactly like: Genetics & Biologybefore: Watson & Crick (1953).

2. Definitions

  1. The standard definition of creativity: (original & effective / new & useful). (see: Runco & Jaeger 02012).
  2. memes, (ideas, processes, products)
  3. and fractals,
  4. and systems,
  5. and: HOLON/partons. Here is a visual symbolic definition of the HOLON/parton Structure of the meme, the unit of culture (and narreme, unit of story.) [A picture’s worth 1K words but a symbol’s worth 1K pictures. i.e., Information compression. See Shannon 1948, etc.]

3. The Proposed Solution – The HOLON/parton structure of the meme–the unit of culture and, the unit of story.

i.e. The Definition I have proposed (see: diagram above) IS the solution to the Problem!

See this book-chapter, it was an Appendix in my 02016 PhD.

4. How It Solves The Problem – It means you can analyze and measure and isolate units of culture. [Even units of: story.] (Then you can synthesize them again – feel free.)

You just use The 3 Laws of HOLON/partons as a lens, a tool, a device, a model, to analyze: things. …Everything.

& once more, with feeling:

See those 5 book-chapters for details.

(I know I keep saying that, but it’s: true.)

It also has a Meta-Model of creativity:

And it has a mathematical formula:

(i iterates to P; back to i; repeat forever)

i=P tree

See this video, if you like that kind of thing:

The FSMM-M of BCEC (& HOLON/parton structure of the Meme) – (Velikovsky 02020)

5. How It Solves Other Problems:

(1) It ends the war between gene-level, group-level and multilevel selection (e.g.: Dawkins vs E O Wilson vs D S Wilson); (…It’s all: MLS… You just have to think about: Systems as HOLON/partons. See? Easy.)

(2) It allows A.I.s (artificial intelligence / robots) to understand human culture way better and thus: hurry up and solve all our complex and wicked (and even: simple) problems for us.

(3) It helps with consilience: re-uniting, the 3 great branches of learning – the Sciences, Social Sciences, and Arts/Humanities.

Consilience trisociation

(4) It also actually applies to all Domains in Culture… so, it solves about an infinity of problems. (But who’s counting?)

Read on, to see how, and why. (Or – wait, stop reading now, if you don’t like seeing problems get solved. I warn you, this could be shocking, if you don’t like: progress. And all the values of The Enlightenment Project… Newton & Darwin & Francis Bacon and all that. See Pinker’s great book, Enlightenment Now.)

Enlightenment Now - cover

6. Possible Objections / `Opposite Conjectures’ – There are many, but they’re all wrong. They’re all arguments from ignorance, and thus a complete waste of everyone’s time. (Science is true, whether you like it or not. I don’t have time to argue over facts.)

7. …So What? So; everything is different, now. Including, that: you need to go rewrite all the textbooks. (All of them. Not even kidding.)

8. How do you Test it? (i.e., The scientific model [aka scientific “theory”] of the H/p structure above, including the 3 Laws…?) Answer: Next time you read, watch, or otherwise perceive a canonical unit of culture (e.g.: a book, a movie, a joke, a TV show, a painting, a photo, a conversation, a religion, a scientific model, anything) examine the parts and then the whole, and see [i.e., test] if, it adheres to the 3 laws (of HOLON/partarchies), or, not. (Note: the theory decides what we can observe, and: you’re welcome. Note: I don’t want “the scales to fall from your eyes”; quite the opposite – I WANT YOU TO SEE & APPRECIATE: SCALE-!!! And, see, the self-similarity of structure on different scales, of units of bio-culture. Seriously.)

Also, you can test it by: using it to program an A.I. to read and perceive: meaning, and see if it works?

Or, you can program an A.I. to generate high-RoI movie ideas, or, whatever.

9. …Now what? Now, where’s my Nobel Prize-? (Watson & Crick got one for doing this in Biology. So should I, for doing it in Culture… [Right?]

…I smell Bacon. …Do you smell Bacon?)

Anyway, so – that’s just one example, of The Problem-Solution Model of Creativity.

(See my Ph.D for more, I rave on about it for ages, in there.)

…A great book-chapter on it all (on: Domain problems & creativity & whatnot) is:

Getzels, J. W. (1982). `The Problem of the Problem’. In R. Hogarth (Ed.), New Directions for Methodology of Social and Behavoural Science: Question Framing and Response Consistency. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.
